I have found pictures to be very helpful when educating people who follow the OWL (Omaha Weight Loss) Hcg Diet. My version is unique from most Hcg Protocols (that typically follow the Simeon Protocol from the 1940′s). The OWL Diet diet allows for 600-700 calories per day. The result is that you will lose an average of 15-20 pounds per month. Whereas Simeon referred to his 500 calorie per day diet as Very Low Calorie (VLCD), I use the term Low Calorie Diet (LCD) to describe my safe and highly effective method to lose weight .
Why is the LCD safer? When we consume 700 calories per day, our body is then looking for a an additional 1500 to 2000 calories that is needed for basic body metabolism. The Hcg directs your body to utilize fat stores, and in so doing, you lose unwanted fat. As the body burns off that fat for energy, ketoacids are produced as a byproduct. The resulting acidosis needs to be at a safe level to avoid unwanted side effects such as fatigue, headaches and troubles with concentration. There are rare reports that excessive levels of acidosis can lead to cardiac irregularities. With my LCD protocol, that has never happened. It is also a reason that candidates for the Hcg OWL Diet must be carefully selected by a physician who is entirely familiar with administering a LCD program.
After you read the blog, and are ready to commit to follow the OWL Diet, call us at 402 614 5556 to schedule your appointment. Carter O. Abbott, MD
The first 2 days that you use Hcg Shots or Cream are called Day 1 and Day 2. On these 2 days you may choose to “Fat Load”. During this time, enjoy limited amounts of fatty foods. This is a great time to enjoy a treat that you will not be eating again until you reach your Target Weight. My goal for you is to not gain any additional weight over these 2 days. During fat loading “Be Prepared for Day 3″, which is when you will start the OWL Diet. Remove food from the refrigerator and cupboards that might tempt you to “Cheat” (my term for any variations from the following approved list of foods).
Enjoy the following pictures, as I take you step by step through my program. All of the following foods were purchased in Omaha Nebraska in early January 2010. Lets first talk about:
Beverages – It is important for you to drink lots of water. Water is essential for body function and metabolism. Water also works to control your hunger, and keep your bowels regular. The minimum is 64ounces per day. It may be bottled or tap water.
You may continue to enjoy coffee and tea (hot or cold). You may not use any form of dairy products (even “fat free” is not always “calorie free”). You may use any form of artificial sweeteners.
I permit the use of caffeine containing beverages, but keep in mind that caffeine has a diuretic effect to increase urine output, so any caffeine containing beverage does not count towards your fluid intake for the day.
Pops and sodas have no positive nutritional value, but their consumption is very habit forming. I permit you to drink pop, but it must be diet or otherwise zero calorie. After you reach your target weight, I will encourage you to reassess your use of pop beverages.
For those of you who struggle with water consumption, there are many choices of flavored beverages that use artificial sweeteners. They may be consumed, but the label must state zero calories.
Meats – You will need a food scale. A basic spring scale with plastic basket is all you really need (as shown below). You will be weighing all of your meats before cooking. Your daily allowance is 7 ounces of meat per day. Weigh it uncooked – you cook it – then divide it into 2 meals. By dividing the 7 ounces into 2 meals you will have better energy, hunger control and better fat burn.
Choose from lean beef, white chicken, white fish, shrimp and scallops.
Beef - must be lean. Choices include beef tenderloin, ground sirloin, and top sirloin steak.
This diet is not conducive to eating out, but if you had to go to a restaurant for a special family or business event, you could choose to not eat meat all day, and then order 7 ounces of lean beef, chicken, fish, scallops or shrimp.
Limit your beef to no more than 2 days per week. Seven ounces of lean steak is 2x the calories of 7oz of lean chicken or white fish.
Chicken - You must purchase your chicken fresh (or fresh frozen), and cook it yourself. Chicken tenders and breast are used. Remove any visible skin or fat before weighing. No pre-cooked chickens, canned chicken or cold cuts.

7 oz of chicken tenders and 7 oz of ground sirloin (shaped into 2 x 3.5oz patties) placed on "cookie sheet" for baking

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, season meat, and place another sheet of foil loosely over the meat to keep it moist. Bake for 40 minutes, or until done.

7 oz of Chicken Tenders cooked, and ready to be eaten cold, diced onto salad, or rewarmed in the microwave
No oil is permitted in the LCD. You will be cooking your meat using non stick pans, grilling with PAM spray, or baking in the oven (poaching of fish is also acceptable). All PAM sprays are rated as zero calorie.
There is a butter substitute that is a soy derivative. Sold in a container shaped as the one in the picture, it is called either “Smart Balance Spray” or “I Can’t Believe it’s not Butter”. As always, read the label to confirm that your purchase is zero calorie. Use on vegetables for flavoring.
“Walden Farms” is a label that offers a wide variety of sauces and dressings that are all rated as Calorie Free.
BBQ sauces and marinades are generally high in calorie. I found this one, shown below. Use one tablespoon to flavour meat.

Marinade meat or vegetables with "KC Masterpiece" Roasted Garlic Balsamic Marinade - 1 Tbsp = 15 calories
Venison and Bison are lean game meats. They may be used with caution, as fat is often added to ground meat or sausages.
Shrimp - may be used. Fresh or “fresh frozen”. Shrimp is often pre-cooked, and this is fine as well.
Scallops – are also an option. No lobster, crab, or salmon (too high in oil).
White Fish - may be used. Fresh or “fresh frozen”. You may not use tuna. Acceptable choices include tilapia, sole, cod, halibut, orange roughy, flounder, perch.
Let’s now talk about
Fruit. You are allowed 2 servings per day. Mix and match from the available choices. Fruit is often best enjoyed at breakfast, or as a snack between meals.
One serving size includes 1 apple, 1 orange, 1/2 grapefruit, 6 medium strawberries, 1/3 cup of blueberries, or 2 cups of melon. Try to always buy fresh, but in winter fresh frozen is acceptable. (Grapefruit interferes with the metabolism of many medications, so check with your doctor to see if it is safe for you).
2 cups of melon is about 100 calories – so if you choose melon, you may have only one serving per day – combine a second serving from the other approved fruits.
Vegetables are next. If you enjoy salads, you will enjoy my diet! You may eat as much fresh salad greens as you wish. Choose from lettuce, romaine, baby greens, and spinach.
All vegetables other than lettuce, I call “the hard vegetables”. I allow a rough guide of 4 cups of fresh hard vegetables per day (before cooking). Raw vegetables that may be added to salads include tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers of any color, celery, radishes, cucumbers and bean sprouts.

Make your salads interesting - add peppers of any color, celery, radishes, tomatoes, sprouts and diced chicken
The vegetables that people usually cook with include: tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, celery, peppers, green beans, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage, summer squash, winter squash (acorn, butternut, spaghetti)and edamame.

More Vegetables - Summer Squash (yellow/thin), Zucchini, Spaghetti squash, Acorn squash, Butternut squash to name a few

You do not have to measure the salad greens (lettuce, spinach) or celery – they are so low in calorie that I consider them to be “free” and are allowed in unlimited amounts. Celery makes a great snack between meals, and travels well.
Choose fat free low calorie beef and chicken stock to make your own soups, or use in a slow cooker. I told you to limit your beef consumption to no more than 2 days per week (because beef is twice the calories of chicken). When it comes to stock – the opposite is true! Beef is lower in calories than chicken (?surprised – I was!). In the example pictured below, 1 cup of chicken stock is 10 calories, but 4 cups of beef stock is only 20 calories!

You may use Emeril's Beef and Chicken stock that is fat free. Wyler's chicken and beef cubes are permitted. Make your own soups, or slow cook with these.
Ketchup is not permitted, but you may make your own fresh salsa using onions, tomatoes, lemon and cilantro. Traditional mustard (“French’s” or similar) is zero calorie. I was pleasantly surprised to find the following German mustard that was rated zero calorie – Rhinegeld.

Traditional French's Mustard is zero calorie. Look for Rhinegeld German Mustard, rated as zero calorie!
Roland capers may be added to salads, or used with meats. 1 tsp of Roland green peppercorns was only 5 calories.
Some pickles/preserves are acceptable if used in small portions. Read the labels and enjoy a serving on salad, or as a snack.

Mezzetta Peppers - One Serving size ranges from 5-15 calories - great snack, or add to salads. Choose from Sweet Cherry, Sweet Banana, Jalapeno and HabaneroUse lemon and lime juice to flavour chicken, fish, scallops and shrimp. Or combine with water and an artifical sugar sweetener for calorie free lemonade or limeade. In the jar, as shown below, they are rated as zero calorie. As a fresh squeezed fruit - each lemon or lime is about 10 calories each.Real Lemon and Real Lime are zero calories - use all you wish!

Wish Bone Spritzers come in several flavors - choose the ones that are 1 calorie per spray, limit yourself to 10 sprays per day
The Hcg OWL Diet allows considerably more “grain carbs” than the VLCD. I find that these carbs are great snacks between meals, evening treats, or emergency food when you are travelling by air or car. Try them for breakfast combined with a serving of sugar free jam.
The following Italian breadsticks, made by the grissini method, are very popular. Choose from one of the options below for your daily allowance.

After popping - divide into 2 bags, and enjoy over the course of a day. Add a serving of "Kernal Season's" Nacho Cheddar for added flavor - only 2 additional calories

I need to lose 75 lbs. Can this diet help me do that?
Wow, this is SO HELPFUL! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. And here, I’ve been splitting one tiny melba toast into halves and eating it that way (because I thought I had to!). You rock!
I’ve only just begun but I’ve lost 7 lbs this week. I hope I can reach my goal by late this fall. I have approximately 100 lbs to lose. I’ll be a frequent visitor of your blog.
Cheers!
I have been on the HCG diet for 2 weeks and lost 12 lbs. I am glad to find this site because the list of foods were very limited on the other website I was using. I am on the drops and not the injections. I was going to stay on the diet for the required 26 days but may go for the long haul since I have found this site with so much more to eat and “variety”
Thanks so much for the pictures. I may be able to find the breadsticks now.
Rhonda
Do you allow folks to stay on HCG and the LCD for an unlimited amount of time – or until they have lost their desired amount of
weight? Or, as in the Simeon Protocol, do you do HCG in 43 day
intervals, then going to Phase 3, and putting extended time periods between rounds of HCG? Thanks much for this information.
Thank you so much for posting this. I was so glad to read that you accept all artificial sweeteners, Pam, and my favorite, edamame! I’m just starting the HCG diet, but I have a lot more confidence in it after reading your material. One question: what do you think about tofu? I was thinking it would be great stir-fried with veggies or breaded in crumbled up melba toasts and pan-fried in Pam or baked.
Also I wanted t know your thoughts on a little light soymilk or unsweetened soy milk in coffee.
I am planning on getting pregnant in a few months, but first would really like to lose my remaining baby weight from my first child. Will the HCG program have any effect on my hormones or body chemistry during this process?
Is sugar-free Jello allowed?
I was wondering if it would be ok to eat this certain pasta they say is totally calorie free…”Miracle Shirataki Noodles” I have read a few articles about including these into the HCG diet. I wanted to get your opinion…Thanks!
Just wondering where you can buy Alessi breadsticks in Omaha? I’ve been unable to find them @ HyVee or Bakers.
Also wondering if you allow any type of fat-free salad dressings as a part of your program?
Thanks
This website is awesome. I was eating a salad with just the greens b/c the menu I got from another website said to eat only one item from the veggie list. And I also was only eating 2 melba toast a day. One with each fruit. This makes the diet more bearable. Omahamedspa you ROCK!!!!☻
Great site!… I have been ‘crazy’ faithful to the original VLCD for 22 days with an average loss of .56# per day. It seems awfully slow to me. What is your observation of the average daily loss?
I am female, 58, and plan a total 30# loss.
As a nurse, I found the original diet rather strict, especially with all the calorie free items available. Why do the ‘experts’ forbid aspartame and splenda? I am nervous about including the options that you have blessed since my loss is slow to begin with.
thanks for your time!
Why do you have to weigh the food raw? I’ve been weighing my food after they’re cooked
Is cooked food heavier, or less heavier than raw?
Thanks!
I lOVE THIS WEBSITE. I can see myselt successful doing he LCD method. My question is I like to go out every other weekend with my girlfriends. What is a low calorie or diet alchoholic cocktail that will not throw me to far off my caloric intake for the day? Shall I have 2 flutes of wine – with equals one regular glass or shall I go for a diet coke and crown royale?
Glad to find your website! Have been on VLCD 500 calories and bored with limited foods. Can I have flour tortilla, pepperidge farm slider buns or cinnamon raisin bagels? All have 100 calories, low fat, high protein and 5-6 grams of sugar each.
Hi, i just started the diet, and i have to tell you, i am scared to death to impliment these additional foods! but i love this site! i started the 500 calororie diet this sunday, i have lost three pounds so far. so i’m very encouraged about this working for me. i would however would like to try to add a little extra. thanks for posting this site! little scared but will start your diet maybe next week and i’ll post again to let you know how its going. Thank you for a great site!!
Dr. Abbott…Thanks for your response. Can we have black beans…1/2 cup serving, calories 110, fat 0.5g, carboh 19g, protein 6g; organic brown jasmine rice…1/4 cup serving, calories 170, fat 1.5g, carboh 35g, protein 4g; vegetables-okra, eggplant or any hard cheese-eg. cheddar or hoop? How many total carbohdrates or grams of sugar should we have daily?
Have been on VLCD and hcg 125U and lost 32 lbs over the last 3 months. Female, 5’6″. Need to lose 50 more lbs. Had to take a 6 wk break due to MD following Dr. Simeons diet. Urine ketones-trace to small amt while on VLCD. Is this ok? Fasting glucose 2wks ago 69. Thanks for your time. I just love your website.
What is your opinion on taking fish oil supplements? I have taken 2 oemga 3,6,9 supplements for the past few years. Will this have any effect on the effects of HcG? I love the website! Thanks for the blog!
T.G. for this website I am on day 17 and am so bored with menu i was given. POPCORN really popcorn i cant wait to go to the store. I printed pictures of the other items and on my way to go look for them. i will kepp intouch.
tt
great site – thanks!
Hi guys ! What a great website !! Thank you for researching this product and taking the time to share you information. I am 50 pound over weight and am debating doing this protocol. Since you do not do phases , do you just start eating normally after you have lost your pounds ? I like that idea much better than the others, but are there any implications from that ? Thank you Stephanie
What about egg product/egg whites?
I just started the HCG OWL Diet today and I am very excited, I have lost weight on other diet programs (Phin Phin) with great success but it always came back. I desperately want this to work so I am very committed. It is great to go back and reference this site with the pictures of all the different foods. I have never liked fish but I am going to try some (broden my horizons) Do you have any recipies you could share for any meals? would prefer meat or chicken, I am trying to get my husband to make better food choices also.
Thank you so much to you and all your staff.
I’m planning on starting HCG while at home for Christmas break. My concern is about when I head back to college. On average I walk about a 1-2 miles a day from walking to classes and walking to work. What is the recommended exercise regiment for the LCD? I would really like to continue at school but am not sure if my walking will interfere or make me weak
PLEASE RESPOND
thank you! Happy Holidays
Where can I buy your book? I live ib KC, MO can I come to your office to be monitored by your staff? How long can I stay on this diet before i need to stop. I am addicted to sweets and I have about 200lbs to lose.
Thanks
`’; I am really thankful to this topic because it really gives great information ~~,
Can I use this diet while taking prescription meds?
THANKS FOR THE INFO, I’M ON HCG/500 CAL DIET. LOST 13 LBS IN 10 DAYS. I LIKE THIS SITE BECAUSE OF THE FOOD CHOICES. ALTHOUGH, I DON’T KNOW ABOUT ADDING MORE CAL TO MY DIET. ON AVERAGE I’VE BEEN LOSING A POUND A DAY. WILL I STILL LOSE IF I SWICH DIET?
GREAT SITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m doing another round of hcg at the 500 calories. When is your book out and where can I get it? I would like to implement more variety and calories.
This is my fifth round of the diet over the course of a year and a half. It has gotten slower and slower on the weight loss each round. I want to shed my last 25 pounds this round and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
I am pre diabetic and watch my numbers. My day time numbers I can keep in range but my morning numbers have been as high as 130. Is there some thing that I can do to get that back down?
Is this recipe legal, 1 cup chicken broth, and then I added chopped up onion, celery, red pepper and measured it for 2 cups. When done I added my portion of chicken. It was very good but were there two many vegatables?
Thank you
I see that you allow squashes, like acorn and spaghetti squash! Have you found that these have inhibited losses in your patients, at all? It’s nice to see broader choices.
My wife and I are doing well with HCG, but both think a lot about foods we would like to eat. I love watching the food network. Phisically doing fine, but mentally I really appreciate the added guidence. Our program is so limited it leaves questions unanswered for acceptable food options as well as dry problem skin. I have slowed some from losing a pound a day, but feel more confident long term.
I just spent thirty dollars ordering ” miracle noodles “. I hope I didn’t waste my money but this diets success is more important to me than the thirty dollars. I did not notice you mention them as acceptable. Are they alright to eat on this diet? P.S. Thank you so very much for all your amazing advice.
I have spent the last few hours discovering and learning about the hcg diet and am very excited at the prospect, especially because I am here in Omaha and would much rather be seen than risk buying something over the internet. I have a family reunion coming up in three months and am anxious to start but really curious (and hoping) if you will have any further specials coming up that will reduce the price? Thanks!
What is the cost of the program? I went through my Dr to do injections and lost 35 lbs and would like to do more but want to do drops and my DR won’t do those. My last 40 day program was only 116.00 not counting the 2 office visits.
I’m curious about the ketosis, which I understand is the process by which you start burning your abnormal fat stores instead of carbs. Most of what I have read says that to induce ketosis, you drain off your glycogen with exercise or fasting, then avoid carbs (but fat is okay). So what is the basis for restricting fat on the HCG diet, to the point that I’m not even allowed to get a massage because I’ll get oil on my skin? The rules on Dr. Simeon’s protocol seem a bit arbitrary — if there was some principle that could be used to determine what’s allowed (x cals max, x grams fat, x carbs, etc.) this would make a lot more sense. For example, why no tuna, when these days you can get albacore in water with less than 1 gram of fat?
Is home grown spouts allowed? Also, I use olive oil on my hair after I wash it since it it so dry. Is that a problem?
Can sweet potatoes be eaten as a vegetable serving?
If a patient is on the transdermal cream and wants to take the Vitamin B-12 shots, is there an additional charge for the injections?
How does your diet work for a vegetarian? I am doing HCG right now, but am only allowed egg whites, tofu and protein powder. Can you recommend any other options? I like your ideas of adding some variety.
can i mix the vegetables? i.e. red peppers and onions and tomatoes?
or again is it just one vegetable choice?

Can you eat fish and seafood?
February 4, 2010 at 10:12 pm
White fish, but not tuna.
No salmon
Shrimp and Scallops are also acceptable

Hi,
I noticed that you have the Nakano Rice Vinegar on there… but doesnt this contain olive oil as well as a “rice” ingredient which is a starch that is not permitted on the HCG diet? I have this vinegar at home but have been afraid to use this, becuase of the certain ingredients?
Please HELP!
as this is my favorite Vinegar.
April 15, 2010 at 6:50 pm
The bottle of Nakano rice vinegar that we use states “zero calories”. We have been advising our clients to use it, without problems.
