Hcg Diet at Omaha Med Spa

Creams, Lotions and other Myths

Posted by: omahamedspa on: October 14, 2009

Simeon stated that the use of body creams and lotions would interfere with the success of the Hcg Diet.

What does modern medicine have to say about that 60 years later?  When a moisturizer, cream, lotion or sunscreen is applied to the skin, there is ready absorption into the epidermis (the outer layer of skin).  Most of the absorption is limited to the outer layer we call the stratum corneum (or horny layer).  This layer is in a continuous process of shedding off, as new skin cells form.  Very little “oil” such as mineral oil has the ability to penetrate deeper.  The result is that these oils are not absorbed into the body, and do not add caloric energy for the body to use.  Active ingredients in skin care products such as chemical sun blocks, AHA’s and BHA’s do have the ability to penetrate to the deeper epidermis and outer dermis, but they do not provide nutritional energy or calories to the body.  The bottom line is this…go ahead and use as much lotion, creams and moisturizers as you like!

Is the Simeon ban on using makeup or cosmetics also a myth?  The answer is Yes.  Dr. Abbott and the staff of Omaha Med Spa understand the importance of aesthetics to women, and can confidently reassure you that it will not interfere with weight loss to use cosmetics.  If there are any “Simeonites” who cling to this myth, you should at least feel reassured to safely use high quality mineral cosmetics, such as the Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup – it is free of additives and preservatives, the colors are all natural, and there is no lead in the lip products.

Wow, great blog. I love reading blogs about {the benefits of HCG! I lost 23 pounds using it.

Thanks again for this blog – it is really well-done.

this is my week 1 with the hcg using the cream, but i noticed that 2 days ago, i started getting this ichiness at night only, i dont have any red spots or anything, just feel like iching. Is this normal?
thanks

Is the itching in the location where you apply the cream?

sometimes it is, sometimes i feel that itches on my neck too..its weird, but ill try to avoid sugar free gum bc seems that everytime i have some at night, my itchiness starts

What about the use of personal lubricants? I know the skin cells are differently composed in your genitals than the rest of your skin. Will products, such as KY, be detrimental to use during HCG treatment?

Personal lubricants are fine.

I am delighted to have found your blog. The hCG ban on cosmetics and lotions seemed questionable to me. Glad you blew these myths out of the water.

Great blog! Thank you so much.

I initially lost weight on the hcg doing Dr. Simeons plan. My friend told me about this website and I am delighted.

Great! I have updated the diet from the 1940′s – needless to say that things have changed! For example, there is nothing wrong with frozen foods, as long as there is no breading or additives. We can now enjoy a wider selection of low fat/fat free grain carbs. I have found sandwich thins that are 100 calories per roll. Divide the roll into an upper for breakfast, and the lower for later in the day – great toasted, or as an open faced sandwich. There are also Kangaroo pita pockets that are only 80 calories per pocket.

are the sandwich thins for the vlcd or the next phase?

I allow sandwich thins (100 calories per serving) as a one day allowance of grain carbohydrates – this is specific to the OWL (“Omaha Weight Loss”) Diet and not a feature of the Simeon’s VLCD.

I was very excited to find your website. Can I use castor oil, apricot oil, coconut oil, emu oil, vitamin E/A oils, also shea butter on my body and face. In addition, to olive and grapeseed oils. I hate to use mineral oil, since my skin itches with mineral oil, as Simeon’s protocol shares. Thank you for sharing valuable information, your OWL LCD DIET seems more tolerable than Simeon’s diet.

Try small amounts of oil on the skin, and see how it works out. Most people use pharmacy products that add moisture to the skin without any problem. No consumption of oil in any form by mouth is allowed.

If creams and lotions don’t absorb beyond the upper layers than why am I taking hormones in a cream form that I massage into my inside forearm?
I’m on my 3rd HCG injection round and have aways adhered to the no creams/lotions/make-up rule … do I understand you to say it isn’t necessary because there is little to no absorption?

Good question.

Cosmetic products that are purchased over the counter are limited in their absorptive capacity. Some products, like Lubriderm (containing mineral oil) sits on the outer layer only, and acts to soften the outer layer (less sensation of itching and dry/tight skin), and the oil acts as a barrier to protect the outer layer of skin. The mineral oil in Lubriderm does not absorb into the body. Most moisturizers work in this way, only on the outer layer of the epidermis.

For a topical product to be absorbed into the body (sytemic) it must penetrate through all of the layers of the epidermis, across and basal layer, and then enter the dermis. The dermis is where the blood supply exists. Transdermal hormones are placed into special cream bases (the one that I like is called LipoDerm, and is the one Omaha Med Spa patients receive from Kubat Pharmacy). LipoDerm acts as a vehicle to carry the hormone across the skin layers, into the dermis, where blood vessels absorb the hormone.

The amount of LipoDerm that I use daily is miniscule at 0.1mL, so there is no metabolic consequence to exposing that small amount of LipoDerm to the body.

Anti-aging skin care products, such as the line I private label as Omaha Med Spa skin care, are designed to penetrate to deeper layers of skin as well. That is the only way that they can be of therapeutic benefit. These products do not add calories of energy that the body could use. Ingredients of anti-aging skin care contains substances such as hydroxyacids, retinoids, and Vitamins (D and E for example) that work on the cellular level. The body will actually exert miniscule amounts of energy to metabolize these substances.

Hopefully this helps clarify the issue.

Dr. Abbott

Hopefully this clarifies the issue.

Thank you for the detailed reply…makes sense and I’m off to buy some Lubriderm.

Just so I’m clear. Is it ok for me to continue use of bio identical hormone creams for menapause (estrogen/progesterone ) while on hcg diet? Also does thyroid meds(armour thyroid ) affect hcg diet progress?
According to Dr. Simeons book it suggest abstaining from this medication so diet to works properly.

Bio-identical hormone creams are fine.

You should definitely stay on thyroid hormone replacement, or your weight loss will be slower. I am aware waht Simeons said, but today we know that he was wrong.

Thanks!

Carter Abbott MD

Thanks Dr. Abbott for your welcomed medical advice… It is greatly appreciated!!
