Hcg Diet at Omaha Med Spa

What Exactly Can I Eat on The OWL Diet?

Posted by: omahamedspa on: August 29, 2009

With all of the changes that I have introduced to the Hcg Diet, it has become uniquely my own – I call this The Omaha Weight Loss Diet, or simply OWL Diet for short.  Buy my book “The OWL Diet” for detailed information, inlcuding Recipes, for only $19.95 at www.Amazon.com – simply enter “The OWL Diet” in the Search Bar and Amazon will have my book on your doorstep in no time!!

The first day that you start using the Hcg by shot or cream is called Day 1.  One cycle of Hcg lasts 4 weeks.  The dose of Hcg is 125iu for all participants.  The average amount of weight loss in a 4 week cycle is 15 pounds for women, and 20 pounds for men.

On Day One and Day Two of starting Hcg, you may choose to  “Fat Load”.  During this time you are given permission to eat fat rich foods such as pizza, burgers and fries, fish and chips, ice cream, desserts, donuts and pastries.  Consider this your “last hurrah” of eating unhealthy foods.  Until you lose your weight, you will not be consuming these foods again.  I also encourage moderation, because if you gain 1-2 pounds during fat loading, I do not give you credit for those pounds.  Your weight at your initial consultaion is your starting weight.

Can you skip “Fat Loading”?  The answer is a definite YES!  But many of my participants need 2 days to eat up the “bad” food at home, go shopping for OWL Diet approved foods, read my book, and get totally committed – so that by Day 3 they are ready to go.  If that describes your situation – then by all means Fat Load as a way of allowing 2 days of “Preparation”.

I then talk to you about “Be Prepared for Day 3″.  Day 3 is the day that you will start the Low Calorie Diet (LCD for short).  You must follow this diet exactly, as any alterations may result in a failure to lose weight.  You will need to know where you will buy your food, how it will be cooked, and how you will transport it to work or activities.

My program is not conducive to dining out.  I strongly encourage you to avoid eating out during your active weight loss treatment.  For those who must travel with work, there are unique challenges ahead!

You are permitted Mild Exercise only on the OWL Diet.  You may walk up to 30 minutes per day, but only at a leisurely pace.  You may not exercise in any way that will result in sweating, increased heart rate or increased respirations.  Why is this, you may ask? The reason is that exercise stimulates your appetite, and opposes the therapeutic action of the Hcg.

If you smoke, this is not the time to quit.  Tackle one problem at a time.  Either quit smoking first, or quit smoking after you have lost your weight.

I break your daily allowances on the LCD into food categories:

Beverages:  You may drink hot tea or hot coffee.  There is no limit on caffeine.  You may use any of the artificial sweeteners that are available.  Diet Pop is acceptable.  Flavored beverages are also acceptable, as long as they are zero calorie.  Drink lots of water – 68oz (2 liters) per day is the minimum.

Meat:  Meat portions must be weighed prior to cooking.  You will need to buy a food scale for this purpose.  A simple spring scale with food bucket on top will work just fine, or use a digital scale if you already own one.  You will be preparing your meat without cooking oils.  You may grill outdoors, use a non-stick pan, bake in the oven, steam or poach.  All varieties of PAM non-stick cooking sprays are rated as zero calories, and may be used.

You daily meat allowance is a total of 7 oz.  Divide this into 2 meals of 3.5 oz each – that way you will have better hunger control, better energy and better fat burn.

Your meat must be purchased fresh, or frozen.  Frozen forms may not have any additives such as breading or oil.  You may not use precooked meats, processed meats (“cold cuts”) or canned meats.

Here are your meat choices:

White Chicken Meat – chicken tenders or chicken breast.  Remove visible skin or fat.  You may not have legs, thighs or wings.

Lean Beef – Beef tenderloin, sirloin steak, ground sirloin, or filet mignon.  Limit beef to only 2 days per week.

Bison or Venison – These game meats are considered low in fat.  Be careful if you select a ground meat – if white fat is visible, then it is not lean enough, and may not be used.

Shrimp and Scallops – are acceptable.  You may not have tuna, salmon, crab or lobster.

White Fish – choose from sole, orange roughy, cod, perch, halibut and tilapia.

Vegetables:  Use only fresh or frozen vegetables.  You are allowed 4 cups of vegetables per day (measured fresh or uncooked).  Eat them throughout the day, and feel free to combine vegetables at one sitting.  Making salads is ideal (the calorie count for lettuce is so low that I do not count it, and you don’t need to include the salad greens in your 4 cup limit – celery is also “free”).

Choose from:  spinach, all forms of lettuce, beet greens, tomatoes, celery, fennel, onions, mushrooms, red radishes, cucumbers, zucchini, sprouts, peppers of any color, asparagus, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, or brussel sprouts. Snow peas are allowed in moderation (max of 1/2 cup per day).

No canned vegetables.  No corn.  Eat the above vegetables fresh or cooked.

Grain Carbohydrates:  Up to 4 Italian breadsticks made by the “grissini method” such as Alessi brand sesame breadsticks   OR  Melba Toast – you must choose the rectangular form that comes in a cellophane wrapper of 5 pieces per pack.  Choose from the following varieties of Melba Toast – Classic, Wheat or Rye   OR   Swedish Wasa Crisp breads (crackers) 2 per day OR 4 Ak-mak crackers OR one bag of Orville Redenbacker’s Smart Pop microwave popcorn in a 100 calorie mini-bag OR 1 bagel thin OR one thin bun/roll.  As you shop for these items be aware that the calorie allowance for grain carbs is limited to approx. 100calories per day.

Fruit:  You are allowed 2 servings per day.  Choose from the following fruit, listed in a single portion size -

1 Apple, 1 Orange, 1/3 cup of blueberries, 6 medium strawberries, 2 cups of cantalope, melon or watermelon, or 1/2 grapefruit.

Use only fresh fruit.  You may not use dried fruit, or canned fruit.  You may not use bananas, pineapple, grapes or any other fruit that is not listed above.  Limit of one serving of melon per day.

Fats and Oils:  None are allowed.  You may use the non-stick PAM sprays.  “Smart Balance Spray” offers a buttery flavor, but is derived from soy, and it rated as zero calorie.  In the place of salad dressings, balsaimic vinegar is low to zero calorie.

Seasonings:  The juice of lemon or lime (fresh or bottled – such as RealLemon) is permitted.  Use it to flavor tea, add to chicken, fish or shrimp or use lemon combined with an artificical sweetener to make Lemonaide.

Salt and pepper are fine, as are fresh or dried herbs.  Any dry spice such as curry is also acceptable.

Try Bragg’s Liquid Amino’s as a substitute for soy sauce – it is made from soy sauce, looks and tastes like soy sauce, but is zero calories.  Use is on meat, salads and vegetables.

Comments on The OWL Diet:   Always read package labels for the calorie content.  Try to always buy fresh meat and vegetables, and always use fresh fruit.  For breakfast, try one serving of fruit, and one grissini breadstick.  Precook your meat in measured portions for several days in advance.  Limit beef intake to 2 days per week, as it is higher in calorie content.  Focus predominantly on white chicken and white fish for your meat selections.  If you are not losing 3-4 pounds per week, then cut back (or eliminate) the grain carbs.  Read my other blog postings on alcohol, constipation, sleep efficiency, exercise and supplements.  Supplements of B Complex Vitamins, Calcium and Vitamin D are mandatory.

And most of all – remember that the Hcg OWL Diet has not failed anyone, but some people fail the Diet.  Make sure you are ready to make a commitment to follow the LCD.

I am about to start the hcg diet and I eat a lot of wild game duck and goose. It is very lean and clean with no preservatives or processing, but I noticed that it says no duck during phase 2. Why is that? and is it bc the duck most people eat is tame and processed. Please let me know asap so I can get started. Thanks

I believe that duck meat is darker, and therefore higher in fat – it would definitely not be advisable with the Hcg Diet.

can u smoke while in the HCG diet?

Yes, you may smoke. If you are thinking of losing weight and quitting smoking, I strongly advise patients to work on one goal at a time. Following a low calorie diet is not the time to also quit smoking!

I am a smoker and kept smoking on the diet. I started in May and have lost 55 pounds. I haven’t been on it since late June but I have really stuck to the diet. Just last week we had a special for a seven day tune up and I bought it. I have lost six more pounds since I stopped in June. I was a Diet Coke freak and quit drinking it altogether. I also was a wine drinker and quit that too. I weigh myself morning and night and if I am up a little I really cut back the next day. I have been on so many diets and nothing worked, This REALLY works if you stick to it. I cook my chicken in the oven with salt and pepper and hot sauce. It is really good. I wrap it in Lettuce. I also found that the Walden Farms Caramel is great on apples and the Chocolate sauce is GREAT on strawberries. This diet is a miracle if you follow it. I drink coffee with Truvia in the morning. I didn’t think I could drink it without cream but it is not bad at all. I drink tons of water all day and drink unsweetened iced tea and water at night. LOVE THIS DIET.

First of all thank you for reading this.

My question would concern diet soft drinks and lo-cal energy drinks such as sugar free red bull or lo carb monster, i think we are talking about 10 calories per serving. Should these be completely cut out?
Thank You
Sincerely
DM

Diet soft drinks are all permitted.
Low cal energy drinks are not permitted if they have any calories. My preference is that even a low cal drink with 10 calories is not allowed. Be cautious when you read labels for beverages – a drink may list “10 calories per serving”, but the container size may be 2.5 servings – so the actual content in that container becomes 25 calories!

I take daily thyroid pills (Levothyroxin) and calcium w/D every day. Will I be able to be successful on the diet and continue to take them?

I require all of my patients on the Omaha Hcg Diet to take Calcium with Vitamin D.
The calcium dose per day should be 1,000 to 1500mg and the Vitamin D range is 200-800iu per day.

Continue thyroid replacement hormone on the weight loss program. Your blood level of “TSH” should be checked every year, and if the dose of levothyroxine (or any other replacement thyroid hormone) is adjusted up or down, the TSH will need to be checked more frequently.
Your need for thyroid hormone will not increase or decrease during weight loss. Thyroid hormone is typically taken for life.

Hcg is a hormone, but in the low dose of 125iu per day, it does not interfere with thyroid hormone, birth control, estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone.

can i eat gum? and may i take vitamin d3

Sugar free gum is fine.

Vitamin D3 at the recomended dose is also perfect.

even though there is 5 cal in 1 stick? and most sugar free carru spartame less then 3%

The criteria for use of gum is sugarfree and calorie free.

sorry that was aspartame i ment to write! also during your menstruation is it true that you will become immune to hcg if injected during? and can you start a new cycle of hcg when 3 days into your menstrual cycle?

I will refer you to my other blog pages on Immunity. Essentially I do not believe it exists. Regarding menses – I do not stop Hcg during menstruation.

Is seaweed (no salt added) allowed in HCG diet?

I had to research your question on seaweed.

It depends totally on which type of seaweed that you eat.
1oz portions of “agar dried” is 87calories, and “spirulina” is 83 calories – these two are not permitted due to the high calorie count.

Acceptable 1oz portions of seaweed are all “fresh” – which I would think is hard to come by for most people.

So in summary, fresh seaweed looks OK, and dried is not permitted.

and can I eat snowpea during the diet? Thanks

I looked into the calories of snowpeas – and it looks like they should work. As with any “tweaking” of the diet, if it does not work, then discontinue.

I have dematitis and use Desonide on my face and OTC Aquaphor on my lips otherwise they get really dry and irritated. Is this okay while on the HCG?

Thank you.

That should not be a problem.

As a side note, Desonide is an excellent prescribed corticosteroid Cream, and I often recommend it. However, it’s use on the face should likely be limited to flareups of your skin condition, and not daily – daily use could cause thinning of the epidermis, and appear as increased redness.

After you have lost 50% of your weight towards your target weight – then I permit one serving of Egg Beaters in the am – only 30 calories. You can mix with fried (in PAM) onions, peppers, tomatoes.

Cottage cheese is a vegetarian substitute for meat – in my experience this does not work out very well – chicken or beef will fill you better than cottage cheese

I am curious as to why Egg Beaters are not allowed until much later since they have very little calories and are an excellent source of protein.

I am so thankful to have come across your web site and information as I was miserable just a couple of days in to the Simeons protocol. I am starting your protocol as of this morning.

egg beaters are an acceptable alternative to meat selection – I do not allow them at the beginning for the simple fact of keeping the diet message clear and easy to follow. After 1-2 months it is great to be able to offer options to people who are getting bored with the food selection.

For the first 2 weeks, I would avoid these 2 foods. Cottage cheese is a meat alternative, but will not fill you the same way as a serving of chicken, beef or fish. I permit egg beaters after some weight has been lost.

Hello,
Can I drink any alcohol on the loading days?
I have some here I’d like to get rid of!!

I know there is NO alcohol allowed on the regular diet.

Thanks!

3 alcoholic beverages per day allowed with fat loading.
1 drink per day during my version of the diet – ie low cal beer, 4 oz of dry wine, 1 1/2 oz of liquor with diet pop.

Is tuna in water allowed on hcg diet? How about egg beaters? If the anywer is no, how come? It’s low calorie, low fat and low glycemic index plua high protein. I’m confused!

Yes – you are right. I encourage my patients to follow the initial offering of food as I describe in the blog. After losing 20-30 pounds, if they are bored with the food selections, then I do permit them to try tuna in water, and egg beaters – usually they do fine. Some users of tuna seem to see a slowing of the weight loss, but I have no explanation of why that is. I have found that offering everything possible on Day 3 creates confusion as to what is and what is not on the approved list of foods.

can I use a tablespoon of FAT FREE of Coffee Mate creamer insted of milk?

If you look at the Coffee Mate creamer carton, I believe you will find that it is not calorie free – that is the problem. Fat free does not equal Calorie free.

Glad someone asked this question because I am bored with just water and tea in the morning. My coffee creamer says, fat free with 10 calories; Can I have that?

Try it and see how you make out.

Fat free is not calorie free – sorry!

What happens if you “cheat”, ie too much food or alcohol?

Cheating results in failure of weight loss.

Can I have white meat turkey breast cutlets? or elk burger?

If the cutlets and burger are preprepared into portions before you buy it, then they likely have unapproved additives. Be very careful. If you are buying fresh meat, and preparing your own, then you may have better success.

i like iced coffee i use splenda and nonfat ceeamer, what is the best way to make the coffee

Iced coffee is a great idea. Splenda (or any other artificial sweetener) is fine with my diet. Be very careful however with the nonfat creamer – it is not calorie free, and I suggest you avoid it altogether. Try the flavored packets from Splenda (such as Mocha), or sugar free Torani in vanilla or caramel.

Im already on an hcg diet in another state, but definitely dont have these choices! I take 125 iu/day, and am not hungry, but would love to add some foods. Are these conducive to only your diet, or all hcg diets? Thank you!

They will work well with all Hcg programs – but I do allow a total of 600-750 calories per day.

Can I take a multivitamin while on the HCG diet?

Yes – in fact I strongly suggest that it is advisable.

The diet is low in Calcium, so I advise Calcium Carbonate 1,000-1,200 mg per day and Vitamin D 200-800iu per day. Also, a B-Complex with adequate levels of B-1, 2, 6 and 12. We sell a Douglas Laboratories version of B-Complex, called Tri-B-100, and the dose is one per day.

A multivitamin is too low in the above – you may take it – but it is not an adequate source of the above supplements.

i am taking the oral drops. what happens if i forget to take a dose?????

Are you supoosed to take only 6 shots out of a 7 day week day? I was told this is to prevent immunity to the hcg

The issue of immunity to Hcg is no longer relevant. Dr. Simeon’s notion of immunity has been discredited as we have learned more about hormones and antibodies. There are still many “Simeonites” out there who adhere to the 6 days with, one day without hcg, but they can safely (and should) use hcg daily. This is all part of my modern day update on the program.

I started the HCG injection on Saturday. I had to “Fat Load” an extra day (3 days instead of 2). Will this interfer with my weight loss? Can I munch on say a tomatoe that was to be apart of my lunch salad as a snack?

tomatos are part of the approved vegetables – total vegetables per day limited to 4 cups (fresh) – but you will do better to choose a variety of vegetables each day.

I cheated! I didn’t have my meals prepared and hadn’t eaten since 10 am. It was 9 pm and I was famished! I had a 2 inch square of homemade lasagna. What do I do? Does it take days for my body to get back into the fat burning mode like Atkins or does it begin immediately when I return to following the diet?

Return to the diet immediately – you will be fine. Learn from this experience, and always be well organized with foods that are on the diet.

Hi. I am on day 7 and found your site. I have read other HCG plans that do not allow multivitamins that contain E, and some even D. Is is because they are the fat soluble vitamins? I am using regular multi vitamins and a potassuim. I am trying to decide what is best and I think I need the Calcium and B vitamins.
Also, what about chicken and beef broth? Allowed?

All of the vitamins that you mentioned are excellent choices. I strongly advise the use of Calcium with Vitamin D, B-complex, and where appropriate Potassium 99mg per day.

The only supplements I advise against are oily based – such as flax oil, and fish oil.

Vitamins A,C,D and E are fat soluble, but are fine with my program.

Hi, I am so glad I found your site. I was at a stand still and not loosing weight for about 4 days. I was told to eat 6 apples and hardly no water for 24 hours. Is this true? And does this work. I weighed myself and still at a stand still? Please help. I have been eating the 500 calories and no more and eating only the listed fruits and vegetables.

Re: the “apple day” – this is an old idea, but should be combined generous amounts of water. By limiting the amount of water, you will lose water weight, not fat. As for whether on not the apple day works – I would have to say that I have tried it with numerous people, and my overall impression is that it is no better than staying with the actual diet. So no, it is nothing wonderful.

If you are on 500 calories per day, and not losing weight, your doctor needs to order a thyroid screening test called the TSH – you may well have an underactive thyroid.

Hi! I saw the little bit about smoking on the HCG diet. I am currently on the diet but am having a hard time now smoking. I only smoke in social settings and was wondering how that will effect my diet? Please help.

Thanks, Diana

Occassional smoking in social settings will not affect your diet. Once you get to your target weight, I hope that you will be able to quit smoking altogether.

I started injections on 5/17/10 on day 1 of “Loading”. The next morning I felt cramps and bloating as if before starting menstruation even though it should be 8 days away, however, continued with morning injection and day 2 of “Loading”. Day 3 administered morning injection and began VLCD but have begun to “spot” with abd bloating and cramps. I am under the care of an MD and my hcg came from a compounding pharmacy. I tried contacting my Dr. this afternoon, but it was probably to late and now concerned with hyperstimulation. I’m 42 , astmatic and hypothyroid (Hashimotos). My weight is 123 and I’m on a 23 day cycle. Is this normal after just 3 injections?

You definitely need to contact your physician.

My apologies, I didn’t realize there was other posts r/t my question. Great site!!!

Can I eat pork loin while on hcg. Excess prev spelling my son was hitting buttons.

I do not allow it at the beginning – but you may try a “tweak” by trimming all the fat off a pork tenderloin, and bake in the oven. No premarinated forms allowed. Some people get away with this modification.

Great site!! I have been on the HCG LCD since 5/10 and I’m down 15.5 pounds…600-800 calories per day!! Is grilled or baked Mahi Mahi allowed? Thanks

try it once or twice a week – if you still are able to lose weight, then you know you can continue with it. For reasons that are unclear to me, some people eat tuna and ahi, and it interferes with their weight loss.

I am going to be starting this diet soon i have just ordered it online….I do walk almost everyday for about 50 mins its a brisk walk is this allowed on this program

I do not approve of on-line ordering of hcg. It is illegal and the FDA is correctly going to crack down on the internet sale of Hcg, a prescription medication. Some purchasers and sellers will be prosecuted – be forewarned!

I encourage walking 15-30 minutes daily – as long as it does not stimulate hunger, and the temptation to “cheat”

Afer eading these blogs you have answered one part of my 2 part quesion in regards to light excercise. thank you

What is the normal amount of weight loss for someone that is one the diet for the 21 days straight?

On my version of the Hcg Diet (I call it the OWL Diet for “Omaha Weight Loss”), I allow more variety of food, and more calories than Simeon – the average weight loss over 4 weeks is 15-20 pounds.

Hello Doctor, I am on my first “load” day and I have a terrible allergy cold. Other than vitamin C, what can I take to alleviate this runny nose and sneezing?
Thank you!

If it is allergies – use Claritin, Allegra or Zyrtec.

can you take vicodin on the hcg diet?

Someone asked, but I missed the reply about the so called “miracle noodle” which is calorie/fat/carb free. Glucomannan
Would love to know if this is ok and if you have experience with it.
Thanks a bunch

miracle noodle is acceptable.

When and How would you incorporate miracle noodles / House Brand into plan? During the first 30 days as a veggie? If yes, how much would a serving be?

miracle noodles are fine at any time, and in any amount, due to the low calories. No limit on serving size.

Hi, I’ve been doing the injections and doing well, but I find that I’m often not hungry for my 500 calories. Is it critical to eat it all? Also , how important is the combination of foods? I decided to forgo the melba toast totally, and some meals skip the fruit because I am satisfied.
I’m so happy to have found your website…so much information. I had thought that maybe some veggies on Dr. S’s diet were due to availablity of the 1950′s.
Thanks so much.

As a doctor, my comfort zone is to advise 600 calories per day as the minimum. Always eat the 7oz of meat per day – it is needed to burn the fat. Oranges are a great source of Potassium, and 1 or 2 per day will help reduce the incidence of muscle cramps.

i’m on the hcg drops for almost 3 wks now and doing the 500 calories. i lost about 13 lbs but i’m really bored of the limited food i’m allowed to eat. sometimes i don’t have enough energy to do my work. i want to follow your protocol but will i gain weight if i suddenly increase my calories to 600-750?
thanks!

You will not gain weight – and your rate of weight loss should average 2-3 lb per week, based on your first 3 week result.

Hi-
I started the diet on 5-13-10. I ordered the shots on the internet…I didn’t know it was not legal (too late now) In 18 days I have only lost 6 lbs! I did have one day that I ate a normal diet (I cheated)but went right back on the next day. I also have been fighting with a rash on my arms and legs. I am on the 18th day, I would like to know what the possible problems are as I have stayed within the 500 calories on all days except the one. I am very frustrated as I see so many people losing the weight. Please help.

Here are the possibilities:

By ordering on the internet, you did not get a reliable source of hcg

You have hypothyroidism – check with your Dr and have a TSH blood test to find out

You are very constipated, and holding on to extra weight.

Finally…weight loss is faster for men, tall individuals, and young people.

Do some people get more Headaches while taking HCG? and is bacon accceptable during the maintenance weeks? And ccn you tell me more about this miracle noodle-I have never heard of that

I am not aware of headaches from hcg at a dose of 125iu daily.

Bacon is high in fat, and not allowed as part of a healthy maintenance program to keep your weight off.

miracle noodles are available at Asian food marts.

Can I eat cauliflower on the HGC diet

Tell me your feelings of dairy products like nonfat yogurt. Can that be used as a protein??

I don’t advise use of any dairy while on my LCD. For proteins stick with beef, chicken, white fish, shrimp and scallops.

Hi, I lost about 19 lbs on the VLCD and am now on the next phase. I want to lose about 20-25 more lbs. I was wondering if I have to continue the phases since I started them, or if I can just start the LCD. I was also wondering if I should eat more calories when I work out? I am 33 and do Kung Fu four times a week. I love the workout and am not willing to git it up. However, I was getting a bit dizzy on the 500 cal diet. I also think that this might be the reason why I didn’t loose as much weight. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for your wonderful sight.

Exercise reverses the benefits of the Hcg. On a LCD, limit activity to yard work, house cleaning, laundry, walking up to 30 minutes, stretches and hand weights of 10 lb max.

I have been on the VLCD and am now on the next phase. I noticed that your diet does not have phases and was wondering if I need to complete the phase that I am on before I can start the LCD. I am currently in phase 3 or the Adkins portion of the program.

I am also wondering if it is a good idea to increase my cal on days that I work out? I am in a Kung Fu program and usually go 4x a week but could possibly cut it down to 2x. I have to pay tuition and I am working on belt advancement.

thank you for your time

I do not refer to phases, as I do not find them to be necessary.

On the LCD, I do not advise working out, as your hunger will increase and you will be inclined to increase your calories.

This is my 15th day on the HCG diet. I had no idea I had so much fat to lose but it’s been falling off like crazy. Some days up to 3 lbs. I’m past my goal weight and think if I lose more weight I will look too skinny. Is it possible to stop the diet early or do I have to continue the diet and increase my calories? Will stopping early cause me to gain all the weight back? I very much appreciate your help

It is OK to stop the diet at any time, and increase calories.

I have been on the HCG diet using drops for 5 weeks. The first 2 weeks I lost 5lbs each week. But since then I am only losing about 2 lbs a week. So for about 5 weeks I only have a loss of 15 lbs. I called the help desk for the company that sold me the drops and they advised that some people have problems with tomatoes. I have been eating a tomato everyday. Do you think that could cause the slow down in my weight loss? I have been following the diet exactly and not using any products I should not being using. They could not tell me anything else I could do to help myself. Do you have any thoughts?

Thanks for your help

Tomatoes should be fine.
We allow them with the OWL (Omaha Weight Loss) Diet, and see an average of 15-20 pounds lost per week.
The problem is likely that the drops are of poor quality or potency.
I do not use drops in my practice, as I found that the absorption is poor, and inconsistent between individuals.
I would advise seeing a doctor/med spa that uses the shots.

Would it be acceptable to eat plain, steamed artichokes on the VLCD?

First of all, my diet is LCD, with a minimum of 600 calories per day.
Fresh artichoke hearts cooked 1/2 cup is 42 calories – this would be a “Tweak” and might work out fine on an occasional basis – such as 1/2 cup twice per week.

what about eating spinach noodles.

What is the calorie content?

Can I take Centrum Silver Chewable Vitamins (once daily)?

Are mushrooms and soy sauce ok to use with the HCG diet? If so, how much of each?

Thanks so much!

mushrooms are part of the 4 cup per day allowance. Try Bragg’s Liquid Aminos in place of regular soy sauce – think of it as zero calorie soy sauce.

i just started the shots today 08-25-2010, I wanted to know if smoking medical marijuana is acceptable? It does not increase my hunger aka “the munchies”, most of the time, but I still want to know if i can continue smoking.

it’s OK with me. Where I live, it is still not legal.

Is turkey allowed for a meat? I found 99% fat free ground turkey from Jennie-O. Serving Size 112 g, Calories 120, Dietary Fiber 0 g, Total Fat 1.5 g, Protein 26 g

Good question – it really should be fine. I call this a “Tweak”. Tweaking with foods that are within the calorie range, and low in fat usually work out just fine, and are great additions to prevent “food boredom”

I was wondering about taking the HCG and following the diet, you addresed the use of thyroid meds, meds for constipation, sleep aids, but what about pain relief, OTC and prescription meds, short acting and time released. Opiod types and NSAIDs.

All of the meds you mentioned are fine. The more complex medical history that a person has, may lead to some challenges – such as coping with chronic pain and being able to focus and follow a Low Calorie Diet.

I’m sure you’ll say to consult a Dr, but…I also had a question about pain medications – I have chronic pain as well – what challenges are you referring to? Challenges with pain or with the program? In your opinion – would taking Ultram ER and Vicodin effect results? What about Asacol, Imuran, and Neurontin?

When you are in pain – whether it is acute lasting only 1 day, or chronic lasting months to years – the challenge may be controlling hunger. Some chronic pain sufferers lose appetite, others eat for “comfort”.

Ultram (tramodol), Vicodin (Hydrocodone) and other meds do not interfere with the Hcg, or the program.

Success at weight loss takes strong focus and commitment. If managing chronic pain takes away your focus, your success with weight loss may be compromised. I do not mean to sound “negative”, only asking you to be realistic, and choose the best timing.

When the time is right, anyone can be successful at weight loss with the Hcg OWL Diet!!

Try tofu and egg whites.

The white of one egg is only 18 calories!

try egg whites, egg beaters and tofu

Are sliced raw (not roasted/toasted) unsalted almonds ok on the HCG diet? I’m looking for a protein that I can have on hand in the car on a car trip.

I have another one for you. You addressed sugar free energy drinks but what about Red Bull Sugarfree Shots? It has no carbonation and is 2 calories per bottle.

Hi! I am getting ready to sart the diet and wanted to know if it would be ok to use 110 cal. fat free, sugar free protein shakes that I buy at a health food store in place of the some or all of the food if I stay within the calories? They are very protable and require no prep., so I thought it would be easy when I’m all day.

The short answer is no – I want you to eat real food – not shakes.
After you lose your weight, you may resume shakes if you wish – but the trend in healthier eating is not eating calories in shakes, but to eat real food. This will likely be hard for you to accept – but in the long run, eating real food results in permanent weight loss, and a healthier body.

I’m very athletic, and work out about 3-4x/week, running, cycling, I want to lose about 5-10#, but I don’t want to lose any muscle. Does this diet prevent that from happening? I only want to lose the fat.

Thank You

Exercise is good for you – but it is not good when you are on a diet that allows 600-700 calories per day. Exercise makes use hungry – and we are trying to control hunger!
On the OWL Diet (or any other Hcg lower calorie diet) you can engage in mild exercise:
Walking up to 3.3mph on level ground for 15-30 minutes, light bicycle ride, yard work, laundry, house cleaning.
So…to answer your question…with reduced activityon the OWL Diet, your muscle mass will drop slightly. But the hcg will help direct the burn of fat to lose the 5-10 pounds. You will be on the diet for only 2-3 weeks to achieve your goal – then you will resume your active exercise and your muscle mass will recover very quickly.

Can I dehydrate the allowed vegetables and fruits – for example, can I dehydrate the spinach leaves and eat them that way? Thanks so much!

Hi- I am wondering if I can eat two servings of fruit in a day and no vegetables?

I would not recommend that. Try some vegetables that you may assume that you do not like – maybe your taste buds have changed over time. If you do not eat any vegetables at all, then I would increase your total daily fruit to at least 5 servings – no more than one serving of melon per day. Mix and match a variety of different fruits per day makes the most sense.

Is the Rosemary flavor of Melba toast ok? I looked at the side of the box and saw the same number of calories as the regular flavor.

Never heard of it – sounds like it would be fine – thanks!

I am 24, 5’4″ and about 120 lbs. After my son I haven’t been able to get lower than 120 lbs. I really want to be 110 and fit into my old jeans. Would this diet still work for me? And would it be effective in the first cycle, or would it take longer for me to lose since I have less to lose? Thanks!

Your BMI (Body Mass Index – ht vs wt) is 21 – right in the middle of the healthy weight zone. I would not recommend any form of dieting for you. You are an excellent weight – the old jeans may have to go!

I found wheat bread that is 45 calories for 2 slices. Me and my husband are both on the diet and he works outside and usually takes sandwiches to work. Is this bread ok?

I would say it should work fine. On my version of the Hcg Diet, I call the OWL Diet, I allow 100 calories per day from Grain Carbohydrates, as long as they are limited to under 15 fat calories per 100 overall calories.

I’ve seen some forums where sweet potatoes were acceptable but not yams yet your food list does not have either; are either of these acceptable?

That would be what I call a “tweak”. Tweaks are not typically approved, but may work well for some people. Only “tweak” after you have had some initial success with the Lo Calorie Diet combined with Hcg shots or Cream.

Can I eat brocolli on the diet?

Yes – raw or cooked. fresh or frozen. Part of the limit of 4 cups per day (measured before cooking).

So you cant eat any rice or potatos?

No rice, potatos or pasta – It is a diet afterall!!

I have read the diet protocol and I am wondering if Beans (black, kidney, White Northern, Garbanzo) are allowed or if they can be substituted for a veggie or a protein. Thanks!

No – I do not allow baked beans, black beans, kidney beans or the like. Green beans are fine!

Can the obagi nuderm system for skin care be used while on the HCG diet?

Yes – no problem

is it completely oil free?

No cooking oils – but Pam spray is OK.
Foods are chosen that are oil free, and carbs are no more than 15% of calories from oil.
If a person is overweight, they have oils stored in the fat tissue.

I also have people stop fish oil and flaxseed oil on the diet, and re-start them in maintenance.

I found my egg beater answer on your site- still having nausea though. Thanks for having such a great site that answers so many questions. The LCD is gives much more freedom that strict Simeon’s, and realistic to stick to. When I see somehting I know I’d love to eat, I just think “It’s not that i can’t eat that ever again, just not right now.” I’m sure chocolate chip cookies will still be around in a few months, and the ability to eat only 1 along with it!

This is exactly the info I’ve been looking for. I had a feeling that the Simeon way was for what was available back then and you confirmed my suspicions. AND the LCD makes more sense to me than the VLCD. I’ve been doing my own research on myself and have equal success with more food choices by including options that other protocols allow even though “they” say not to do that. It just seemed like it should all work and you validate that for me. Thank you!

I am glutten intolerant, what bread can I have, Melba is wheat?

There are gluten free products – look for ones that keep you within the daily limit of 100 calories per day. If you live near a Whole Foods – check them out – there are gluten free products in the freezer section.

I found mega-t green tea sugar free chewing gum, 2 pieces is a serving size 0 calories, 0 sugar, 0 fat, 1 gram carb, and 1 sugar alcohol. Can I chew this on the HCG diet?

Yes – that should be fine.

Great info.

This may be a silly question but I have been on the drops for 9 days and have eye twitches. Can this be related?

Eye twitches could be a sign of low potassium – check with your doctor.

Can I use A and D ointment or Aquaphor?

I noticed that the no-sugar added pickles are allowed… Is there a limit on these?

I would limit yourself to no more than 3 pickles per day – makes for a great snack between meals!

Help! I’m craving chocolate. Any ideas

I can relate to chocoholic cravings! Obviously there is no chocolate allowed on the diet…however, I believe Walden Farms still sells a chocolate syrup (check http://www.waldenfarms.com) – you could put this on Melba Toast, or sliced apples. Chocolate cravings are an excellent example of how addictive our “food behaviors” have become. Part of the success on the OWL Diet is the commitment from you – the desire to lose weight has to be stronger that the cravings – you have to say “No”. The less you “Cheat” then the easier it gets – hunger is well controlled – and you stay focused on your weight loss goal as 3-5 pounds are shed on average every week!

Is non dairy sugerfree coffee creamer with 15 cal a tbsp ok all of the hcg websites say no but if u count it as part of your cal for the day would it be ok

I agree that you should not use it.

Hello. I know you don’t do “Phases,” but so you know where I am, currently on the Phase 2, 8th day of VLCD, I have lost 13 lbs. I have stalled the past 2 days, but I know this is a temporary thing (hoping).
My question is if I know go to the 600-700 cals per day from the strict 500 and start incorporating the foods you allow at your place, will I continue to loose? I am specifically wondering about Diet Soda (as this is my weakness!).
Thanks for the info on your site! Wish I still lived closer to come and do this through you!

Yes – on my LCD of 600-700 calories per day you will still lose weight. I allow Diet Soda, but you must still also drink water (2 liters or 1/2 gallon per day).
Please call us to order my book – The OWL Diet – Phone 402-614-5556.

THANK YOU for this website and for taking the time to answer so many questions!

I have had my basal metabolic rate tested and it is actually only around 1200 calories per day rather than the average adult’s 2000 (I have an autoimmune neurological condition affecting orexin/hypocretin in the hypothalamus area of the brain, but am otherwise healthy except for the extra weight).

Will the HCG work for me? I’d guess that fat loss would be slower and less dramatic, but is there anything in the literature to suggest that my brain/body would not respond as expected to HCG? My neurologist has already said he doesn’t know what to tell me.

Thanks again!

It will work for you! But you are right – your rate of weight loss may be slower.

Can you eat carrots?

No – but thin shavings on a salad would be a “Tweak” that shouldn’t hurt – keep it very limited!

I started my weightloss at 321 and have it down to 272. Throgh lots of exercise and a major cutback in calories under a 1000.I hit a major wall and have lost no weight in 11 days. I am a vegitarian who eats eggs honey and rescently the last year fish. would a 2 eggwhite omolet be ok as one of my deals per day no cheese of course. But tomatoes asparigus mushroom to your guidlines.

This falls into the “Tweaking” category.
I do not allow honey at all.
You do need protein, and a meat substitute is egg whites, as you mentioned. The white of an average sized egg is approx 18 calories.
Most vegans also use tofu – 3.5oz firm (138 calories) twice a day.
Your overall calorie allowance needs to be lowered to 700 calories per day.
At this level, Potassium supplementation is needed for most people.
Buy my book and learn all the details!

Im sorry i havent read anything that say jalapanoes are or are not ok

They are approved.
In a fresh raw form they are considered a “pepper” and are part of the 4 cups per day of vegetables that are allowed.

Hi .. thanks for this great website .. could never do the 500 calories a day .. I can’t stand to stomach chicken anymore since I started the hcg diet .. can I eat light tuna in water with smart balance fat free mayo ? or ground turkey ? or a boiled egg ? I can eat the veggies but not the meat ..
can I have the 5 pcs of malba toast and 2 slices of whole wheat fat free bread ( 80 calories for 2 slices a day )? if i can’t eat the veggies and meat ? .. sorry for all the questions ..

Tuna is an adjustment that usually works fine.
I will have to check out the smart balance fat free mayo.
Ground white turkey is also another meat variation that works fine.
As for the egg…the white is fine (18 calories for the white of an average egg) – but definitely not OK to have the yolk.
The bread carbs are limited to no more than 120 calories per day, of which 15% may be fat calories – as with all food choices on the OWL – the less fat, the better!

Can I have sugar free almond milk as a 40 cal snack? I like to put it in a blender with a serving of frozen berries and a packet of truvia. If I stay under 700 calories will it work for me?

Try it – that should work.

Awesome site. Thanks for the generosity of your expertise! I’ve been on the program for one week and have lost 5 lbs, yeah! Two days in a row I ate low fat cottage cheese and also had 2 to 3 pieces of sugarless gum (5 cals. Per piece) and gained .4. What do you suppose could have attributed to this? Also, do you have to seperate out your food choices throughout the day, ie, could I have two pieces of fruit for breakfast then no more throughout the day or two pieces of Melba toast at lunch to make a “sandwich”? THX

I do not allow cottage cheese – I found that it simply did not work well, and does not curb hunger the way that chicken meat will.

The general rule on your food portions is: spread them out over the entire day – do not eat too many grain carbs at one time – use them as snacks between 2 main meals of “meat” and fresh vegetables (raw salads, and a mix of cooked veggies).

I have noticed that some of the HCG diets allow the limited use of coconut oil as it is burned as a carb and not stored as a fat. what do you think of it for use in cooking?

Well – you will run across many variations on dieting, but I do not allow coconut oil – here is the reason:
If you look at a calorie book 1 tbsp of coconut oil is 117 calories – simply too much.

Thanks for the question.

C. Abbott, MD

about the melba toast are we allowed 2 toasts per day or 10? with 5 in each pack or serving Im confused.
sugar free jello? it has 10 calories
Thanks!

The OWL Diet allows for approx 100 calories per day in grain carbs (bread like products) with no more than 15 calories coming from fat. There are now many choices available – by carefully reading the labels on food for Serving Size, and Calories per Serving you can find the products that will work!

Sugar free jello is a treat that I would limit to no more than One serving of 10 calories per day – a nice snack that will not derail your weight loss. There are small 10 calorie cups that fit the criteria – easy for work, travel and other “on the go” moments.

Sorry I didn’t post the first Q properly. I’ve been doing the protocol for 10 days now, no cheating what so ever. To this point I have lost 5 lbs. Besides loosing overall, I had a .4 gain in week one and a 1.3 and .3 in week 2. I have had some issues with constipation but resolved them with every other day 1/4 bottle doses of citrus nitrate. I’ve been drinking a lot of brewed tea w/Sweet n Low with not too much focus on water. I have begun watching my H2O consumption more closely. That being said, what do you suppose is accounting for the gains? GREAT support site, THX!

Unexplained weight gain, or slow weight loss is one of the following:

1. You have an untreated underactive thyroid – have the TSH blood test checked, if the result is over 4 you are borderline, if over 10 you are diagnosed as hypothyroidism.
2. You are still constipated, and the weight loss is masked by the weight of retained stool.
3. You have cut calories too low, and your body is into starvation mode – this happens when people go to 400 calories or less per day – this is very dangerous, and no one should do this.
4. You are not spreading your food allowances out over the day – success is grazing on food all day.
5. For women – premenstrual fluid retention
6. For men and women – too much salt causing fluid retention (fluid = weight), new problems with heart, liver or kidney disease – all reasons you need to be monitored by a doctor on site for weight loss programs.

Hello! great site! thanks for all the useful info. I’m curious about soy milk. i read in one of the post that almond milk may be OK, not sure about soy milk. also i’m curious about granola (or any type of cereal) and orange juice. also and when you say that veggies like spinach are “free” does that mean i can eat them as snacks too, maybe couple times a day? oh, how about carrots? thanks!!

Almond milk can now be found that is 40 cal/cup – compared to skim milk that is 80-90 cal/cup (Yet another example of “Fat free is not always calorie free”). The lowest calorie cereals are plain Cheerios or plain Special K – but the use of this food combo is a major “Tweak” and may well slow down your weight loss – better to try these things after you hit your weight loss goal, and transition back to a normal diet. Granola is too high in calorie for the diet.

As for fruit juices – I say “No” (I am good at saying No!). The rule is “I want you to eat your fruit allowance, not drink it”.

Fresh spincach is a good snack – yes it has calories, but unless you are part rabbit (just kidding!), it should be fine.
Carrots definitely interfere with weight loss success – if you have to have them, use a veggie peeler and put a few very thin shavings of carrots on a salad.

I have just found out after 11 days of being on the HCG drops that I have been taking too many. I have lost 15 lbs, but I have gone through a 1 oz bottle. Is this going to hurt me in any way?

I would say no – the absorption by drops is so low, I consider it to be insignificant. At Omaha Med Spa, I prescribe only Hcg by injection, or transdermal compounded cream.

I have been doing the VLCD for 8 days now and have lost nine lbs> While I know this is great, I am STARVING!! Can I transition into this one without gaining anything back? This one sounds amazing!

If I go from the vlcd to this one will I gain any back that I
Already lost? This one sounds more reasonable

No – that should not happen.

What can I do for constipation. I only go once every 3 days. I lose weight only on day 3 . Then this cyle starts again.

I deal with this important issue on all first consultations.

Here are the guidelines:
Drink plenty of water.
Add fiber daily – such as sugar-free Metamucil, Miralax or Benefiber – and take water with the fiber. Dose it once or twice per day.
If needed – add a daily dose of stool softener to the fiber – buy docusate over the counter at the pharmacy and take 100 to 200mg per day.
And if needed – add a laxative – a popular one is “Smooth Move Tea”, or Senekot, Dulcolax, Mag Citrate.

If constipation and a change in bowel habit persist, then see your doctor. You may need a colonoscopy to rule out more serious causes, such as cancer.

Just stumbled across this blog and think its great. I’m on day 3 of hcg and was wondering if 3.5 oz of jennioturkey burgers were ok to have

I consider turkey a “tweak” – but it works. Here are my suggestions – buy white turkey meat that is ground and uncooked – it should be 99% lean. Fry it with Pam spray. I don’t like precooked turkey meat or prepared burgers/patties. I believe one of the key long term goals of the diet is to encourage long term “clean” healthy food choices – which means buying fresh foods, and learning how to prepare them for eating, without the addition of chemical additives.

I have (had) been doing very well on the diet. I am at day 27 and have lost 15lbs. But the last 5 days it is up a pound, down a pound…no loss. I think it may be a problem with starvation mode…Im not hungry, but usually eat all I should…there are days when I get stuck in town and miss lunch.. Should I eat all the calories later in the day or just stick with a snack and then dinner?
I’ve also noticed you dont use phases…can I continue with the low calorie without the hcg for further weight loss? I have a very special event in May and want to have the weight gone! Im looking to lose another 40 lbs.
Thank you so much for your help

First of all I don’t believe we can use the expression “weight loss plateau” unless a full 2 weeks go by and no further weight is lost.

The reason is
(1)weight loss never occurs at a predictable rate – the rate of loss is uneven – some weeks are better than others.
(2) fluid retention happens and is aggravated by premenstrual state, ankle swelling with travel days and days of increased salt intake. Keep in my that you will retain about 10 pounds of extra water before it shows up in your legs as “pitting edema”.
(3) constipation contributes to retained weight from the stool and fluid.

If a true plateau occurs – then stop the diet, increase calories and increase exercise, and get your doctor to test you for an underactive thyroid gland.

what about potatoes

Can I eat a dill pickle on the diet?
Thanks

Yes- I strongly recommend snacking on Dill Pickles. Read the calorie label on the jar – it should read very low, in the range of 0 to 5 calories per serving. The jars off the shelf tend to be lower in calorie, and the pickles in the cooler section may be a bit higher.

As with all foods – use in moderation – I would not eat 10 or more per day! Pickles are salty and can raise blood pressure, trigger fluid retention in the legs, and aggravate heart failure – but 2 or 3 pickles a day is a great low cal snack – I tell my patients it is like celery – “free”.

Hi! I just started and I have a suggestion for your site. I love the recipes in your book and would like to see more. I am really good at cooking my old high calorie/fat receipes but am struggling with making tasty foods with a variety. I would love to see what others are cooking out there. Maybe a bulletin board for just that? :)

Great idea. Submit some more recipes and I will try to incorporate them into the program, and maybe the next edition of the book.

I had a miscarriage two weeks ago and i am keen to begin the hcg diet. Would you recommend it?

Check with your doctor, but I see no problem in starting. OWL diet participants need to practice contraception, and if they become pregnant on the program – stop the Low Calorie Diet, and stop the hcg.

Very helpful, logical… Thank you.

Can I eat watermelon?

I allow 2 cups of diced watermelon as one serving of fruit. For your second serving of fruit in a day, choose something else, since melons are the highest calorie of my allowed fruit choices.

What do you think of Julian Bakery smart carb bread? It has 109 calories per slice, 1gram of fat, 12 grams of protein, and 12 grams of fiber hence the 1 net carb per slice. It’s east to find their website but I love how you pick things apart and would love to see what you think about using one slice a day on the lcd. I use it while not on the lcd with no issues at all I believe because it is so high in fiber and protein, but being so high in protein would that mess up the lcd? Also I cut my melon in cubes and measure out 2 cups is this the correct way to do so?

Yes – one slice per day of that bread should work – I would eat 1/2 a slice for breakfast, and 1/2 as an evening snack.
Yes – 2 cups of diced melon is one serving. When you choose melon for a fruit, make sure your other fruit selection for the day is different – such as an apple, orange, 1/2 grapefruit or 6 strawberries.

Are Quaker rice cakes allowed? They are 35 cals/cake, 0g fat 8g carbs, 1g protein. Thanks

You could use 2 per day as an alternative to other bread choices. I do not advise rice cakes for most OWL Dieters, as they don’t seem to fill us up well – but if you like them, they will work as a “Tweak”.

I am 4’11 and currently on VLCD 6. My am weight was 133.4 (.8 loss from yesterday) I am hoping to get down to 115….I have read that shorter people who have less weight to lose have a slower rate of loss than say someone 5’5 wanting to lose 50 lbs. Is this true? I have had a loss every day this week, though I was expecting 1-2 lbs per day and have really only seen .4-1 lb per day.

For reasons that I can not explain, people who are shorter than average do lose weight at a slower rate. The opposite is also true – tall people lose weight quickly! I would tell someone with your height and weight that you may have to be happy losing 8-12 pounds per month.

Amazing info!!!
I am vegetarian, lactose and gluten intolerant. I do eat eggs BUT no other animal meats could you let me know of ALL allowed proteins? I feel I am not getting enough protein. I know that you are not supposed to have the same protein twice in a day. Is wheat-grass juice or sprouts allowed?

I do not recommend the Hcg OWL Diet if you are a vegetarian.

I have been so confused about so much on this diet but it is a god send for me. I am so grateful for your candid, quick and informative answers.

So. Easter will be day day 14 for me on the LCD… ham, turkey, potatoes, deviled eggs(love!), rolls, cakes, pies, baked and sweet potatoes, green beens (coocked with bacon), premade cesar salad..ect..

Any advice?

Take a break for Easter – but you have to make healthy food choices, and limit portions. Treat “breaks”, whether they are for 1 day or 1 month the same as “maintenance” – we all need to learn to be protective of the weight we have lost. Enjoy Easter, but don’t over-indulge!

I recently started taking conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) as a way to manage my fat and muscle mass. Is CLA safe to take while doing the OWL diet?

I’m very interested in doing this diet (and am in the Omaha area)- I have steadily gained weight over the past several years and now find that I am alarmingly overweight and getting married in only 5 months. BUT, I am in the military and I cannot avoid exercise (moderate to intense) at least four days a week. Is there any way to reconcile this to the OWL plan?

600-700 calories per day will provide adequate energy for mild exercise only. “Moderate to Intense” exercise would cause weakness, lightheadedness, and you could even black out (faint). Finally, moderate or intense exercise drives up the hunger reflex – creating ravenous hunger that leads to increased need for eating (cheating). So, I’m afraid the answer is no. Safety must come first and foremost. You should be able to consume 1200-1500 calories per day, with exercise, and lose some weight on your own.

I live in Hannibal, MO
How do I go about finding a doctor here who will prescribe injectable hcg. Do you prescribe it online?

NE regs require that we see patients directly to prescribe Hcg. I have had patients travel to Omaha from MO, SD, CO, KS and IA so they can enroll in The OWL Diet. I cannot prescribe online. Once we form a face to face relationship, then a lot of support may be provided by email and telephone.

for those of us who can’t travel all teh way to Omaha..how can we find a doc near us for the prescribed HCG??

I would “Google” this “hcg doctor in _____” listing the city you are in.

I am a massage therapist and use coconut oil on my clients. Should I not use it due to the fat in it being absorbed through my hands and arms?

No – that should be fine.

Can I eat avocado during the LCD? I’ve googled this and I get contrasting answers

I have always said no to avocado.

I am beginning tomorrow hcg, and read Obagi products are OK to use. I live in the deep sunny south and need a sunscreen for my whole body. Any suggestions since most are lotions? How about the sunscreen sprays? Can’t afford to be out without this. Thanks.

In my book “The OWL Diet” I debunk the myth that “body cream, lotions, oils and cosmetics are not allowed”. This is a fallacy – it simply is not true. I have always allowed my patients to use them as they normally would, and it does not interfere with the weight loss.

As you say – skin cancer is a genuine risk and we should all use sun screens year round.

For those doubters out there, who are women, the safest alternative is to use a quality mineral makeup that has Titanium Dioxide in it – a physical SPF sunblock.

why is yogurt not recommended? there are some great low fat, low calorie options out there…some as low as 80 calories 6oz serving.

You can try it if you like. The reason I have said no to it is that most of us find that we fill up better on fruits and vegestables. Low fat yoghurt is great for maintenance eating, and is a staple of my diet today.

why do we sometimes get horrible leg cramps (charlie horses) in the middle of the night? what are we lacking?

Potassium. When you are on a diet (any diet) where the body burns fat for energy, as you do with the OWL Diet, the acidosis causes the potassium to “shift” into cells – the body perceives a deficit exists, and the result is cramping.

The solution is to take over the counter potassium – available as 99mg – one or two per day.

Also – make sure you are drinking enough fluids, and taking a quality Calcium supplement.

My patients take The OWL Vitamin Pak – once per day to cover all of these vitamin/mineral supplement needs.

Dr. Abbott

I drink aLOT of water so it must be the potassium.
thank you

can you use coconut milk with stevia as creamer for coffee?? I am really missing my creamer!!

I would not. If you do, limit yourself to a 10 cal portion, and only once per day.

Hello! In one month on the Simeon protocol I lost 23 pounds but felt tired most of the time. I did it faithfully with the exception of adding a piece or two of “Chocolate Delight” a day, which is essentially equal parts of cocoa + organic coconut oil + Stevia/Truvia to taste, poured into paper plates which harden in the fridge and can then be broken into bite-size pieces. This didn’t seem to impact my weight loss and definately helped with chocolate cravings. I found the recipe online in a number of hcg blogs. I know coconut oil is high in calories but this “chocolate delight” is delicious and I am wondering how to incorporate it into the OWL plan. I am waiting for your book (from Amazon) and I really appreciate approach. I live in Utah and wish I lived closer to Omaha, and I’m sure your book will be really helpful! Thank you.

It looks like that “Tweak” worked well for you! What were the portion sizes of the cocoa and coconut oil?

I am supposed to have some minor plastic surgery in a Dr.’s office under a local anesthesia. He aske dme to avoid nsaids for 2 weeks before surgery. Is it a problem to be on HCG and have surgery?

Removal of a skin lesion would not be a problem with The OWL Diet. For all other surgeries I would stop the diet for at least a week prior to surgery, and not restart until you have fully healed/recovered and the surgeon has released you from his/her care.

Why isn’t crab allowed? Blue crab has only 100 cals in a 3oz serving. Why isn’t lobster allowed? It’s low in calories. How about eggplant?

I actually agree with you. When I write a 2nd edition to The OWL Diet, I am going to be more liberal, and allow crab and lobster. Just no butter!

I’m finishing the basic HCG diet and came across your program. Can I continue on with your program without a break?

Yes – that is no problem.

hello!,I really like your writing very much! share we keep in touch more approximately your post on AOL? I need an expert on this space to resolve my problem. Maybe that’s you! Looking ahead to look you.

What are you interested in?

I am currently breast feeding – in the process of weaning. I have read that the dose of HCG is low… If so, would it be ok for baby to continue to suckle (NOT for nutrition, organic formula would be given, but for comfort nursing/down for naps/bedtime) or is the dose high enough that is would be in breastmilk/harmful to my baby?

Although it is hard to imagine that the low dose of Hcg could be unhealthy for your baby, the reality remains that we have no scientific data to support making that choice. I would have to suggest not combining breast feeding and use of Hcg.

Thanks!

Can I have pumpkin or veggie burgers on LCD

I would have to see the calories per serving and % of calories from fat. Try not to “tweak” the diet too much.

My son is 13 and has been on the drops for a week. He’s lost 6.4 lbs. and is happy! He had back to back B-day parties to go to Fri. & Sat. and he did cheat. Otherwise I think he would’ve lost another 2.4 lbs. So he’s
already learned the hard way what cheating will do. He likes lettuce, but with ranch dressing. We tried the Spritzer ranch, but didn’t like it at all. I know Walden Farms sells it, but we’ve been waiting over a week to get their products. Is there any other alternative for a low cal. ranch dressing? Thanks so much for helping make our lives healthier and happier!

Walden Farms Ranch is your best bet.

Is store bought salsa permitted? Serving size is 2 tbsp. for 10 calories and 0 calories from fat.

That sounds like a good condiment – but I would limit your use to 2 tbsp per day.

do you have to eat 4 cups of vegetables?

Yes – I would prefer that. Some of those 4 cups will go on salad(s), such as fresh tomatos, cucumbers, radishes, peppers(any color) – and some will be cooked.
Eating 4 cups of veggies per day (measured fresh before cooking) is a long term healthy maintenance food choice.

Can you have milk?

No. Unfortunately even fat free milk is too high in calorie. For example – “skim milk” which is fat fee still amounts to 80-90 calories per cup!

In maintenance I encourage our paticipants to use Almond Milk, which comes as low as 40 calories per cup – half the calories in skin milk (and most of us find it tastes excellent!).

I thought I saw somewhere that squash was permitted? But now I don’t find that now, are all types of squash permitted, even butternut and acorn?

I approve the use of squash as part of the approved vegetables. The OWL Diet allows for up to 4 cups of vegetables per day – measured fresh (before cooking). They key here is to use a variety of vegetables per day – that way the calorie intake from the 4 cups of veggies averages out just fine. So, do not use 4 cups of squash only. Mix it up with some green beans, asparagus and radishes – these 3 are lower in calorie.

Hello Dr. Great website! Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. My first question is about dried fruit- i see that you do not allow it. I have found some dried apples that are pre-packaged, freeze dried, 100% organic, nothing added- just apples, and they come in a 80 calorie pack, which would be comparable to eating a regular apple – But, because of how crispy they are they feel like eating a chip- yummy (The brand is Apple Harvest by Simple Foods). Also, I have dehydrated apples myself, with just cinnamon. So, my question is, as long as you are sure there are no preservatives or sugar added, and we dont overeat them, would they be acceptable in your opinion? (I have eaten both and not noticed any kind of gain, but just want your prespective on it) Also, I have tried these drops called Capella- no sugar, msg, calories etc. (they have fruit ones for in water and chocolate/vanilla/etc for in coffee) and again have had no issues, but again, want your opinion. Although i have not had a gain from using these items, I also want to be losing to my full potential.

Dried apple in an 80 calorie pack would be fine as “one serving” of fruit.

I have not seen or heard of Capella – but it looks fine to use!

Thanks for the email.

Is chicken or beef broth allowed on your diet? 0carbs 0 protein 10 calories?

Yes.

I prefer fat free beef broth or stock, as it is the lowest at 5 calories per cup. This makes a good base for soup – add lean beef or chicken, approved vegetables, and season to taste.

I noticed you refer to the 2nd edition of your book a couple of times. Any release date scheduled?

Probably in the second half of 2012. I will allow more foods and break the calorie allowance into 3 groupings based on gender, height and starting weight.

Hi,
Instead of cantaloupe is it ok to eat watermelon while on the hCG?

Yes – my 2012 modifications allow melons as a fruit choice.

One servings of fruit = 1 and 1/2 cups of fresh watermelon, cantalope or other melon.

Is pumpkin or squash allowed

Yes – they count as part of the 4 cups per day of vegetables/day, measured fresh before cooking.

I am curently on the HCG diet, I am wondering how long do I need to wait after I am done with this “round” of shots, to start another “round”?

I am curently on the HCG diet. How long do I need to wait to start my next “round” of shots when I am finished with this “round”?

Dr. Simeon was wrong about “immunity to Hcg”. My patients are allowed to go continuously – month to month – because I allow more calories, food variety and they take a vitamin pak every day – the OWL Vitamin Pak.

If you are feeling well, remain focused and committed, then by all means keep going until you reach your goal.

Will taking Macafem on the HCG diet mess with weightloss?

Help me out. What is Macafem – I do not find it as a prescription med.

Can you have okra on the LCD?

Wow! I wish I would have found this site before I started. I am a week into it on only 500 calories. I am SO starving but I am so frustrated with all the “rules” my plan has.
1. Can’t mix more than 3 vegetables together?
2. Can’t have Truvia- after a week of being told I can?
3. Can’t eat more than 500 calories total?
4. Can’t have eggs?
5. Can’t have a bullion cube?
And so many more that are totally opposite of your allowances.

I would be so happy if I could have bell peppers, a diet soda, watermelon and crawfish?

Any suggestions on salad dressing? I don’t like Fat Free Italian.
Thank you!!!

I modified the original “Hcg Diet” so that it would be safer (more calories) and easier to stick with (fewer rules & more food variety). That is why I called it “The OWL Diet”. OWL stand for “Omaha Weight Loss” – the city where I am from.

Walden Farms has a full line of calorie free dressings. They come in bottles, as well as packets (packets are great for travel, and going to restaurants).

Thanks!

I am on Prednisone for an inner ear infection. I’m on day three (three pills a day for three days, two for…one for). Can I start this diet/program now?

Prednisone causes fluid retention as well as increased hunger – so, wait until you are off of Prednisone before starting The OWL Diet.

Hello again, one more question for you- what are your thoughts on Rutabega, Turnips, or Kalarabi’s- they are all root veggies, so a little more like a potatoe, but from what i have found online, less starchy. I am wondering if you could use one as a sort of potatoe substitute.

I would avoid those – likely too starchy.

The OWL Diet vegetable list is so long, it gives most people all of the veggie variety that they need.

I prefer a strict avoidance of any dairy product while on the LCD. In maintenance it is important to learn about the high calories in milk and dairy products – but my wife and I certainly enjoy limited amounts of milk, almond milk, fat-free yoghurt and cheese – and we have not regained the weight that was lost.
